The Adventurer
The cast tread tentatively on their way to Dizzy’s for Karaoke, discussing how they’ve progressed during the show, the cast feel the dating and pick up process is getting easier, and their bond as a group stronger.
Maurice defines adventure as something involving risk and requiring guts, Kaizer feels adventure requires a steeling of ones nerves.
Karaoke presents a different degree of adventure, one that sees Maurice unashamedly take the microphone and give a serious, and seriously off key, rendition on stage, though he does attract an all female backing group. Kaizer sees Karaoke as a fruitless exercise in preserving ones dignity, and he along with Henri and Trevor only manage a group effort to the tune of “We Will Rock You”
This week’s pick-up is a gruelling crack of dawn female fitness program, delicately named “Boot Camp.” The reaction from the guys is generally unfavourable and more specifically lousy. A 5am start time, and for all the cast, particularly Trevor, zero potential.
Kaizer stands undisputed as the most adventurous, with Henri and Trevor battling it out for second place. Acknowledging a lack of adventurousness, Maurice admits to sending an old girlfriend to investigate a tripped burglar alarm in his flat.
With a disproportionate ratio of men to women, why do guys still find it difficult to meet girls? Girls apparently reckon all the good guys are either married or gay. Trevor reckons that its just down to guys being useless, picking up on this Maurice tells the other guys he thinks he’s been labelled a reject by Hannelie.
Henri decides to play out of his comfort zone on his second date. A far cry from the lavish twelve apostles, he takes a besotted Darden skydiving. For Henri an adventurous date means you push your limits, which in turn makes other aspects of life that much easier. Darden confesses she more afraid of not getting another date with Henri than of her parachute not opening. Her unbridled ardour for Henri is having the opposite effect to what she solicits, seems there will be no meeting Henri’s mom, and no third date.
After a disappointing week and a last minute date cancellation, Kaizer goes wake boarding with friends who tempt him with a possible set up. It turn’s out Kaizer’s mate is actually interested in the same girl, which leaves Kaizer baffled, “if you’re going to set me up on a blind date, don’t give me something you’re interested in.”
Trevor and Maurice double date, riding jet skis at the Waterfront Harbour. Maurice calls on his social network for a blind date, a girl by the name of Robyn. Trevor asks Armin on a third date, and although a harrowing affair for Trevor and Armien, they still don’t miss an opportunity to cop a feel, even amidst an anxiety attack. Maurice admits Robyn’s personality initially catches him off guard, thinking he wouldn’t enjoy the date with her, he finds her “so cool, I actually quite like that little body of hers, in my own way.” For the second week in a row, Maurice is labelled shy by his date, though she speculates that still waters run deep with Maurice, and she’d be keen to see him again.
The guys settle in to a confession and aspiration session at The Protea Hotel bar, Fire and Ice. Kaizer wants to father 5 boys and populate a mini basketball team, Maurice fantasises about stealing away with a mysterious girl to the high class trappings of a penthouse suite, something he terms sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. Henri’s ambition is to have a one-night stand, something his sex therapist thinks is a pretty meagre target. It turns out Maurice’s childhood fantasy of 'pomping' his Afrikaans teacher is a string Trevor has already added to his bow, running into his geography teacher in a gay club and letting him check out his geography, after all, “school’s out!”
